Brennan Huff (Will Ferrell) è un trentanovenne che vive ancora con la madre, Nancy (Mary Steenburgen), e lavora solo saltuariamente, mentre Dale Doback (John C. Reilly) è un disoccupato cronico che vivecon il padre, Robert (Richard Jenkins). Quando Robert e Nancy decidono di sposarsi e di andare a convivere, Brennan e Dale, ormai fratellastri, si ritrovano a vivere insieme. Il narcisismo e la pigrizia che contraddistinguono entrambi minacciano di distruggere il nuovo nucleo familiare, e così questi due uomini di mezza età, bambini troppo cresciuti, orchestreranno un piano per riappacificare i loro genitori. E, per attuarlo, saranno costretti a creare un improbabile legame che forse, ma solo forse, finirià finalmente per tirarli fuori di casa.
